Water-repellent agents made from petroleum byproducts, such as those used with treated canvas tarps, will leave a strong odor. That is why you should not use canvas tarps indoors. However, the odor will dissipate as the material is exposed to air outdoors.

Because the canvas fabric is made with 100% cotton fibers, the tarp will shrink over time. The amount of shrinkage to expect relies on environmental conditions, whether that's weather, sun exposure or humidity.
