Some property owners and outdoor enthusiasts swear by canvas tarps for their needs. The military-grade, single filled cotton duct fabric used in our green canvas tarps offers strength and breathability. At 10 ounces per square yard, it offers heft and weight to resist wind damage, and the water-resistant fabric also resists mildew and condensation. It's a good choice for campers and for gardeners seeking to protect plants or landscaping materials.
Bear in mind what canvas tarps are not recommended for use with, such as car or boat covers. Canvas tarps are fabricated using colored dye and waterproofing wax that may rub off and stain any painted surface that the fabric is in contact with.
As well, canvas tarps should not be used as trailer tarps because material is not made to withstand the pulling force from wind generated while in transit.
Also, be aware that canvas tarps are not fit for applications that pull on the grommets excessively. The tensile strength of canvas tarps won't stand up to large amounts of pull force. Choose vinyl tarps for applications that require substantial force. Lastly, canvas tarps should not be used as divider curtains, side walls or canopy tops.
Where weather is a factor, it is important to know that canvas tarps are water-resistant, but not waterproof. Eventually, the material will meet its saturation point and leak if it's constantly exposed to water, such as being out in the rain.
You should not use canvas tarps indoors either, as they are treated with water-repellent agents made from petroleum byproducts that will leave a strong odor. That odor will dissipate as the material is exposed to air outdoors, however.
The tarp fabric will shrink over time because the canvas material is made using 100% cotton fibers, and the amount of shrinkage depends on environmental conditions. Weather, sun exposure and humidity will all affect this.
