How to Measure a Tarp Correctly Before Ordering a Replacement

Posted by CanopiesAndTarps on Jun 4th 2026

When replacing a tarp or ordering a custom tarp, accurate measurements are extremely important. A small measurement mistake can lead to a tarp that does not fit your frame, trailer, equipment, canopy, or storage area properly.

One of the most reliable ways to measure an existing tarp is to measure from grommet to grommet along both the length and the width. This gives you the tarp’s true usable footprint and helps us recommend or manufacture the correct replacement size.

Why Grommet-to-Grommet Measurement Matters

Many customers measure the outside fabric edge, the stitched seam, or a folded corner. Those measurements can be misleading, especially if the tarp has stretched, shrunk, curled, or been pulled tight over time.

The grommets are the actual tie-down points. Measuring from one grommet to the matching grommet on the opposite side tells us how the tarp is being used and how much coverage it truly provides.

Step 1: Lay the Tarp Flat

Start by spreading the tarp out as flat as possible on the ground. Grass, concrete, a driveway, or a shop floor can all work well.

Try to smooth out large wrinkles and folds. The tarp does not need to be perfectly flat, but the edge you are measuring should be straight enough for a clear and accurate reading.

Step 2: Measure the Length

Place the end of your tape measure at the center of a grommet on one end of the tarp. Run the tape measure straight down the edge to the center of the matching grommet at the opposite end.

For the most accurate result, measure:

Center of grommet to center of grommet

This is better than measuring from the outside edge of the fabric because the grommets are the points that determine how the tarp fastens down.

Step 3: Take a Clear Photo of the Measurement

If you are sending photos to us for help with sizing, make sure the measurement photo clearly shows the tape measure and the final number.

A good measurement photo should show:

  • The tape measure running straight along the tarp edge
  • The starting point at the grommet
  • The ending point at the opposite grommet
  • A close-up of the final number on the tape measure

Avoid taking photos where the tape measure is angled, curled, hidden under the tarp, or too far away to read.

Step 4: Measure the Width

Repeat the same process across the width of the tarp.

Measure from the center of one side grommet to the center of the opposite side grommet. Again, make sure the tape measure is straight and the photo clearly shows the final number.

Step 5: Record Your Measurements Clearly

When sending measurements, please include both dimensions in this format:

Length: ___ inches or feet

Width: ___ inches or feet

For example:

Length: 235 inches

Width: 120 inches

It is also helpful to include photos of the tape measure at both ends so we can verify the measurement.

Common Tarp Measurement Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not measure a tarp while it is folded, bunched, or hanging loosely.
  • Do not measure only the fabric edge if the grommets are inset.
  • Do not estimate based on the old product size printed on the tarp.
  • Do not send a photo where the tape measure number is too blurry or too far away to read.
  • Do not measure diagonally unless we specifically ask for a diagonal measurement.

Best Practice: Send Multiple Photos

For the fastest and most accurate help, send us:

  1. A full photo of the tarp laid flat
  2. A photo showing the length measurement
  3. A close-up photo of the tape measure reading
  4. A photo showing the width measurement
  5. Any close-up photos of damaged corners, seams, or grommets

Need Help Measuring Your Tarp?

If you are unsure where to measure from, send us a few photos of your tarp laid flat and we can help guide you. The clearer the photos and measurements, the faster we can help you find the correct replacement tarp.

Accurate grommet-to-grommet measurements help us understand the true dimensional footprint of your tarp and make it easier to recommend the best replacement option.
